Enhanced Field History Tracking

Salesforce Field History Tracking is a feature which helps to track the changes on the specific field values like who made the changes and when it is happened, etc., and it plays a key role when it comes to the auditing process. Every entry of the data changes will be stored as a record in the history object called StandardObjectNameHistory (i.e. AccountHistory) or CustomObjectName__History if you have enabled the field for history tracking. Also we can track up to 20 fields per object and this can be extended up to 60 with the purchase of Salesforce Shield or Field Audit Trail licenses. And it is possible to set up a report against this history tables for the auditing process. However, it is difficult and tedious process to configure and manage the field tracking across multiple objects - until now.

Winter'26 Update

Earlier if you want to track the field history means, we need to go Object Manager -> Object Name -> Fields & Relationships -> Set History Tracking and then select the fields needs to be tracked for changes. This is object specific and can be configured in each object page which is hectic if you need to configure the fields from multiple objects. And also we can't view what all the fields enable for history tracking in all the object.

From Winter'26 we are having a new feature Enhanced Field History Tracking to configure the field history in a single page from Setup. Yes, you read it right! in a single page. Also we can able to view the summary of all the field history tracking configuration from that page. To access this feature,

  • Go to Setup.
  • Search Field History Tracking from the quick find box and select that.
  • To enable the object for field history, select the checkbox "Enable Field History Tracking" near by the {Object Name}.

Benefits

Below are the additional benefits from the Winter'26 release update than the earlier version,

  • Get a clear overview of field history tracking in your org in a single page.
  • Summary like Total objects tracked, Total vs Tracked fields, High risk field, Field per object tracking limit, etc.,
  • Updated UI includes data classification details like public, internal, confidential fields across all objects.
  • Simplifies audit and compliance processes with better visibility.
  • Search functionality helps to easily access the objects we want.
  • This increases productivity because we can complete this in a single page.

User History Tracking

Unfortunately we can't track the fields form the User object before Winter'26 and now we can. This is most wanted feature and Salesforce always won't disappoint us as always. But keep in mind it is a Beta feature and going to extend. User object tracking is not enabled by default and we need a configuration to be enabled as follows,

  • Go to Setup.
  • Search User Management Settings from the quick find box and select that.
  • Enable the option "Enable User Field History Tracking (Beta)"

There are some limitations when coming to the tracking of User object as follows,

  • The change made on the Role field from the User page will be tracked and not the Role setup page.
  • Custom fields with Auto Number, Formula, Rich Text Area, and Long Text Area data types aren't supported.
  • This is applicable for internal users only.

Conclusion

Enhanced Field History tracking is one of the biggest relief for the Salesforce admins when coming to configure the n number of fields at a time and from different objects. Also this benefits compliance and auditing team when coming to know about what all the fields are tracked and what needs to tracked like that. Salesforce - always delivering, never disappointing.
